BAFTA Winners: ‘The King’s Speech’ Scores Big; David Fincher Wins Best Director

The basic breakdown is that The King’s Speech was the big winner with seven awards in total, taking the Best Film and Outstanding British Film categories as well as acting nods for Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush. David Fincher won Best Director for The Social Network, and Inception took quite a few technical awards. All the details are after the break.
There’s not too much to say about the bulk of these awards, because they so closely mirror what has been happening in other award ceremonies. David Fincher’s win is a good nod to his achievement, though I’m sure Inception fans will be irritated to see the film relegated to technical awards. And not even an editing win! Great to see Chris Morris score with Four Lions, and I won’t argue with any cinematography award given to Roger Deakins. Finally, am I the only one utterly mystified by the two awards doled out to Alice in Wonderland? I know that costume and hair and makeup awards sometimes just go to the film with the most garish designs, but there are any number of films more deserving. Alice has a big box office win, and really doesn’t deserve anything more. (It didn’t deserve the box office win, either, but that’s a whole different argument.)
